What is the important in mushroom cultivation? ›

Casing: Casing is the most important step of mushroom cultivation. It involves spreading of a thin layer of soil over the compost. This provides humidity and support to the mushroom.

On average, one square foot of space in a mushroom bed can produce 6.55 pounds of mushrooms. One square foot is 144 square inches, or 4.5 red bricks in a patio – that's a lot of production power in a small space! In fact, one acre of land can produce 1 million pounds of mushrooms.

High temperatures can cause the mushroom substrate to dry out, leading to poor mushroom development. Yet, low temperatures can cause the substrate to become too wet, leading to the growth of mold and other microorganisms. Therefore, controlling temperature is crucial in ensuring successful mushroom farming.

You can harvest mushrooms 4–5 times or even more for domestic use with proper management of Mushroom bags and using superior quality spawn. However, for commercial production, harvesting three times( three flushes) is considered viable.

The major ecological factors that affect stalk height, stalk diameter and cap size in mushroom are air temperature, humidity, fresh air, and compact material (AMGA, 2004). P. ostreatus can be widely cultivated, and it can adapt to different temperatures.

In general, the mushroom helps the tree extract minerals and water from the soil; in exchange, the tree supplies the mushroom with sugar compounds (carbohydrates).

Oyster mushrooms are the most profitable because they are the easiest to grow and you will find minimal competition in many markets because they do not ship well. Locally grown oysters typically sell for twice the price of shipped-in mushrooms from a distributor.

Because of how they are grown (in indoor growing houses), you don't see them out in fields or go pick them yourself. But this growing process is just part of what makes mushrooms one of the most sustainable foods on the planet. Mushrooms produce high yields from a very small physical footprint.

Mushroom Farming is Difficult

Despite how easy it is to start growing oyster mushrooms or lion's mane from ready to fruit blocks, other mushrooms can be very difficult to grow successfully. Mushroom farming can be very labor-intensive as well.

Whether you're a hobbyist or commercial mushroom grower, the leading cause of crop failure is contamination. Contamination, or 'contam' in grower slang, is anything in your substrate or mycelium that negatively impacts your grow, and can include bacteria, molds, and animal pests.
