The search engine re-ordering feature (which moves independent wiki results above non-indie results on search engines) is no longer limited to just Google—it now works for nearly all our supported search engines!
- Unfortunately re-ordering has not been added to Brave due to technical limitations.
- Thank you to Raz for working on this!
Filtering on search engines (hiding, replacing, and re-ordering) now happens earlier in page load, so it should feel faster and snappier.
Fixes and improvements to Google search filtering, including fixing an issue with breaking Google Image Search.

Adjust favicon display when replacing search engine results. The white background has been removed, the icon now has a drop shadow, and the icon is now 16 pixels instead of 12. This should make the favicons a bit more recognizable and help with color contrast issues.

The Google search re-ordering feature has been updated. Instead of moving indie results to the top of the page, we now move indie results above the first non-indie (Fandom / Fextra / Neoseeker) result. If no non-indie result appears, re-ordering doesn't occur. This is to avoid moving less relevant results to the top, particularly for searches for generic terms.
Other general improvements to search engine filtering:
- For Google search re-ordering, improved matching for determining when to hide non-indie results that match an indie result.
- Updated Qwant search filtering, which had broken due to a change on Qwant.

Search engines can now be toggled! By default, Indie Wiki Buddy will filter search results across its ten supported search engines. With this update, you can now disable Indie Wiki Buddy from running on individual search engines via the settings pages.
On Google, Indie Wiki Buddy will now move results from independent wikis to the top of the list.
- This feature is to help surface the original, content-rich independent wiki results.
- When an indie wiki result is moved to the top, any Fandom, Fextralife, and Neoseeker results for the same article will be hidden.
- This feature is enabled by default, and will run for any wikis that have search engine filtering enabled. It can be disabled by unchecking "On Google, move indie wiki results to the top of the page" from the settings page.
- This feature is currently only available for Google, as it can be complicated to maintain. Other search engine may be supported in the future.
- Thank you to the Weird Gloop team for contributing this new feature!
These new search engine configurations are available in a new "Search engine filtering" section of the settings.

- While Neoseeker has clasically been an alternative to Fandom, we decided to start redirecting away from Neoseeker for several reasons. Many of their wikis are inactive and outdated, the wikis have little ability to customize and configure themselves, and contributed content is not freely-licensed, meaning that communities are unable to fork and migrate away from Neoseeker (which is vital to independence).

- Added option to inject a banner on Fandom wikis that links to BreezeWiki. This is an alternative option to automatically redirecting to BreezeWiki.
- When purposefully navigating to Fandom from BreezeWiki, Indie Wiki Buddy will keep the user on Fandom instead of redirecting the user right back to BreezeWiki.
- No longer injecting custom IWB header in BreezeWiki visits. This was originally done to allow BreezeWiki to customize its experience for IWB users (e.g. remove IWB promo banners), but IWB is now managing that customization.
Added support for redirecting to specific namespaces (this allows us to, for example, redirect the Fandom Skyrim Wiki to the Skyrim namespace of the UESP wiki).

- Reminder that you can visit the full "All Settings" page to customize your experience per-wiki, and a new search box allows you to filter to find the wikis you want to configure.

New search engine filtering experience! Indie Wiki Buddy can now replace search engine results instead of just hiding them. When results from non-indie wikis show up, they will be crossed out and disabled, and a button will be injected that points to the same article on the independent wiki. This is the new default functionality, and is especially helpful for finding new wikis that don't rank well in search engine results yet. The old "hide" functionality is still available for users who prefer that; visit IWB's settings to configure.
New opt-in feature to redirect non-English Fandom/Fextralife wikis to independent English wikis when no independent same-language wiki exists. This can be helpful for multilingual speakers that want to use the many independent English wikis that are available.
On the settings page:
- The settings UI has been reworked to be more clear and accessible.
- Users can now explicitly set the default settings for wikis added in future updates. Previously, the default was being quietly set to the last "set all" button the user clicked.
- New "All languages" filter is available, to view all available wikis across all languages at once.
- A bug has been fixed where the "set all" buttons could conflict with other selections.
In the popup settings:
- The popup UI settings have been reworked to be more clear and accessible.
- Users can now set the default action settings for all wikis via the popup, instead of having to go into the settings page.
Opera users now receive a notice regarding granting IWB permission to run on search engines.
The Chromium bug banner has been updated. Chromium bug 1271154 has been resolved, but there is a new bug 1498035 that can also cause the extension to stop working after an update. If a user faces issues this issue, they now just need to go to their browser settings and toggle the extension off and on again, instead of re-installing the extension entirely.
The Opera and Chromium notices are now dismissible by the user.

Search engine filtering has been revamped! Previously, non-indie search results would be replaced with text that said "A search result from X has been removed by Indie Wiki Buddy. Look for results from Y instead!". Users reported that this was distracting, especially when multiple results were replaced. Now, results are completely hidden, and a single banner is added to the top of the page per-wiki to inform the user that results were hidden. To give the user more control, the banner also includes buttons to reveal the hidden results and/or disable search engine filtering for that wiki.
Fixed issue with filtering on Ecosia that would sometimes cause media to not display.
